Abstract:
Along with the development of materials in the field of civil engineering in terms of the innovation to find
sustainable and low cost substitute materials for conventional reinforced concrete, the bamboo reinforced
concrete is proposed as an alternative material. In this study, the flexural behavior of bamboo reinforced
concrete beams are investigated by flexural test in order to examine the maximum load, the displacement and
the pattern of beam failures. The proposed specimens consist of the reinforced concrete beam with 1% of
longitudinal steel reinforcement, the bamboo reinforced concrete beam with 1%, 2%, and 3% of longitudinal
bamboo reinforcements. Based on the comparison of the bamboo reinforced concrete beams with the steel
reinforced concrete beams, the bamboo reinforced concrete beam with 3% of longitudinal bamboo
reinforcement has the maximum load, the displacement and the pattern of beam failure that closest to the
reinforced concrete beam with 1% of longitudinal steel reinforcement. It indicated that the bamboo material
is reasonable good to substitute the longitudinal steel reinforcement in the reinforced concrete beams.
