Indonesia is a country that is prone to earthquake disasters. Based on BMKG records, total of
earthquake events during 2019 alone was 11,573. Of the total earthquake events, 344 earthquake
events were potentially destructive (Magnitude > 5.0). At present, Indonesia does not yet have an
earthquake early warning system (EEWS). Information about the magnitude of the earthquake was
published after a peak earthquake wave detected, so there was no warning to the community to
evacuate before a destructive earthquake wave came. The on-site EEWS is able to detect the initial
wave (P-wave) and provides early warning for evacuation before the arrival of the next destructive
wave (S-wave). The installation of the on-site EEWS equipment which has a radius of 20 km in
the coverage area that has the same relative vibration effect can provide an early warning to the
surrounding community about the destructive earthquake waves. This paper describes the on-site
EEWS application as a manifestation of concern for the community. Important factors for
application of the on-site EEWS are represented by the level of accuracy in predicting the level of
earthquake intensity and the early warning time. The important factors for application of the onsite
EEWS discussed in this paper are compared with the regional EEWS Taiwan. Based on
existing validation, the on-site EEWS has a success rate of 80% that accurately predicts earthquake
intensity levels and is able to automatically send alarm messages at least 8 seconds before the
destructive peak S-wave arrives. |
